Leviathans, or Leviathan Seeds, are large asteroids originating from the planet Phaaze. The Leviathans are made of large concentrations of Phazon. When they impact a planet, Phazon is introduced to the ecosystem, mutating inhabiting creatures with the effects of Phazon. The sole purpose of the Leviathans is to initiate the spread of Phazon throughout targeted planets and convert target Phazon-consumed planets such as Phaaze.
The Leviathans are exclusive to the Metroid Prime series. Leviathans are the cause of massive Phazon spreads in Tallon IV, Aether/Dark Aether and less severe Phazon spreads in Bryyo, Elysia, Norion and the Space Pirate Homeworld. Leviathans are most important in Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, considering that Samus's main missions are to destroy the different planets' invading Leviathans. The Leviathans are well protected by Dark Samus and the Space Pirates. The Galactic Federation becomes aware of the Leviathans and sends three bounty hunters to destroy the seeds. Dark Samus manages to corrupt and controls the bounty hunters. Rundas, Ghor, and Gandrayda and assigns them to defend the Leviathans in Bryyo, Elysia, and the Space Pirate Homeworld respectively from Samus. Dark Samus even manages to corrupt an Aurora Unit, Aurora Unit 313 to defend the planet Phaaze. Dark Samus and the Space Pirates seek to harvest the Phazon-spewing Leviathans for its corruptive and destructive power. All known Leviathan seeds, however, are destroyed by Samus, along with the Phazon planet Phaaze.
