While the development team was originally going to be a new one,[1] during an update video released January 25, 2019, Shinya Takahashi, the Senior Managing Executive Officer at Nintendo, states that Metroid Prime 4 was not meeting expectations. Due to this, the game development has been restarted and Retro Studios, the team that developed the first three titles in the Metroid Prime series, has been brought back to work on the game.[2]

On June 18, 2024, a Nintendo Direct displayed gameplay for Metroid Prime 4 for the first time, as well as revealing the title, Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, and a release year of 2025.[3] A version of the game for the Nintendo Switch 2, labeled Metroid Prime 4: Beyond - Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, improves the visuals and framerate, along with being able to use the right Joy-Con as a mouse to aim similar to the Wii titles.[4]

Storyline[edit | edit source]

It is Cosmic Year 20X9.

Determined to defeat Samus and the Galactic Federation, Sylux and his army of Space Pirates launched a series of attacks on Federation Research Facilities.

It is believed the Space Pirates are being controlled by Metroids that have the ability to fuse with other life-forms and control their minds.

Now, on Planet Tanamaar in the Desolan System, another Federation Research Facility is being attacked.

Galactic Federation HQ received their distress call and dispatched Samus, who was on a reconnaissance mission nearby...[4]

Once Samus arrives at the facility, she is told there is an artifact within that the Federation is trying to protect. As she navigates the facility, multiple Space Pirates show and start attacking her and the other Federation troops. Upon reaching the Hanger where the artifact is stored, more Space Pirates and Aberax drop in. A Metroid also flies down and fuses with Aberax, empowering and controlling it. Once Aberax is defeated, Sylux breaks into the hanger, along with additional Space Pirates and Metroids beside him. During the fight between him and Samus, Sylux damages the artifact, causing it to explode and send a shockwave through the facility.

Gameplay[edit | edit source]

As part of the Metroid Prime series, Metroid Prime 4: Beyond functions similarly to previous titles. The player takes control of Samus Aran, viewing the world from behind her visor in a first-person perspective. Players are able to aim Samus's Arm Cannon and shoot with her Charge Beam, Missiles, and other upgrades they find. In the Nintendo Switch 2 version of the game, players have the option of using the Joy-Con's mouse function to aim, which is done by simply rotating the Joy-Con to the proper position.[4]

Samus also gains new abilities called Psychic Abilities, which allow her to manipulate objects. For example, moving a lock mechanism on a door, tracing outlines, or guiding a beam she fires.[5]
