The Super Smash Bros. Series is made up of several fighting games published by Nintendo that feature characters from various established Nintendo franchises and pits them against one another in arena battles. Samus Aran has made an appearance as a playable character in every installment released thus far, and has also been playable in her Zero Suit on multiple occasions.

Various other references to the Metroid universe have been included throughout the games, including Metroid-themed stages, music, bosses, items, assist trophies, stickers, collectible trophies, and other cameos.

Characters

Stages

  • Planet Zebes appears as a stage for combat, inspired by the original Planet Zebes. It features an rising and falling acid hazard and background cameos such as Wavers and even Ridley.

Music

Music featured from Metroid include tracks 8 and 18.

  • 8 is a remix of the Brinstar music from the original Metroid, used as background music on the Planet Zebes stage.
  • 41 is an orchestration of the item acquisition fanfare, used as Samus's victory fanfare, respectively.

Super Smash Bros. Melee

Super Smash Bros. Melee
Main article: Super Smash Bros. Melee

Characters

  • Samus Aran returns as a veteran fighter in Melee with the same five color palettes available in Super Smash Bros. Her arsenal includes the same weapons as in the previous installment, with the addition of Missiles.

Stages

  • Planet Zebes: Brinstar appears as a stage for combat, inspired by the original Brinstar area. In many ways it's nearly identical to the Planet Zebes stage from Super Smash Bros., complete with an acid hazard. The large fleshy organism in the background is shaped like a brain, perhaps a tip of the hat to Mother Brain, or even a rudimentary image of her.
  • Planet Zebes: Brinstar Depths is the second Metroid-themed stage in Melee, loosely inspired by Kraid area. Kraid appears in the background of this stage, spinning the central platform occasionally during battles, but otherwise the stage bears little resemblance to any areas of Brinstar in the Metroid games.
  • The Brinstar Escape Shaft appears briefly in the 1-player adventure mode, possibly inspired by a similar shaft in Super Metroid. In this level the character being used at the time must ascend to the top of a large underground shaft using multiple metal platforms within a set time limit.

Items

  • The Screw Attack was introduced in Melee as the first Metroid-themed item. The item can be held, adding a spin to a character's normal jumps that inflict minor damage, or thrown at an opponent, causing them in execute a spinning jump as a disruption tactic.

Music

Music from the Metroid series included in this game include tracks 7, 8, and 41.

  • 7: Brinstar plays on the Brinstar stage and is a medley of a remixed Brinstar theme, the "game start" fanfare heard when one resumes a gamefile in the original Metroid, and the original Metroid title theme.
  • 8: Brinstar Depths plays on the Brinstar Depths stage and is a remix of the music heard in the original Metroid when Samus is about to combat Kraid and a short bridge consisting of the item room music in the same game.
  • 41: Samus's Victory is an orchestration of the item acquisition fanfare and is used as Samus's victory fanfare.

Samus Aran Complete Class Mode as Samus Samus ssbm Trophy.png This intergalactic bounty hunter's full name is Samus Aran. Clad in a Power Suit made by the Chozo race and infused with their enhanced blood, she cleared the planet Zebes of a Metroid infestation. Samus is an orphan, the sole survivor of a Space Pirate raid that destroyed an Earth colony named K-2L.
Samus Aran [Smash] Complete Adventure Mode as Samus Samus (Smash) ssbm Trophy.png Samus has an abundance of projectile weapons, making her a long-distance attack specialist. The most powerful weapon in her arsenal is her Charge Shot, but be warned: it can be reflected. Her missiles have homing capabilities, but when fired as Smash Attacks, they fly on a straight trajectory and have boosted power.
Samus Aran [Smash] Complete All-star Mode as Samus Samus (Smash 2) ssbm Trophy.png While Samus's arsenal of missile weapons is indeed formidable, her enemies are in for a rude awakening if they guard against nothing else. Her Grappling Beam captures foes and latches on to walls, and the Screw Attack drags foes upwards in a series of spins that doubles as a recovery move. Samus can also use her Bombs to perform Bomb Jumps.
Screw Attack Available in 1-player modes Screw Attack ssbm Trophy.png One of Samus Aran's power-ups from the original Metroid, the Screw Attack turns a jump into a rotating attack move. When carrying this item, any character's ordinary jump move will turn into a Screw Attack. By the same token, if you throw this item at an enemy, your foe will spontaneously do a Screw Attack.
Kraid Play 50 vs. matches Kraid ssbm Trophy.png A boss enemy from Metroid. Kraid lives in the depths of Brinstar. He immobilizes enemies with his three red eyes, and his powerful jaws can crush anything. He can also shoot the three spikes in his belly; it's said he often fires them at his prey. Once Samus defeated Ridley and Kraid, the way to Tourian opened.
Samus's Starship Clear Escape From Brinstar in Adventure mode Samus's Starship ssbm Trophy.png This compact ship is used by Samus as her base of operations. Of course, Samus can't fly it into the catacombs of every planet she visits, so she leaves it on the surface as her sanctuary. Samus can recharge her Power Suit inside the ship, so it tends to be the only safe and secure spot on inhospitable alien terrain.
Metroid Available in 1-player modes or Lottery Metroid ssbm Trophy.png A parasitic life form that can absorb all types of energy, Metroids have strong resistance to most conventional weaponry. To defeat them, Samus Aran had to freeze them with Ice Beam shots and then blast them with missiles. Mochtroids, which look like Metroids, are weaker, with fewer internal nuclei.
Ridley Available in 1-player modes or Lottery Ridley ssbm Trophy.png The head of the Space Pirates on Zebes, Ridley soars through space on wicked wings. Ridley may look like a mindless monster, but he's actually quite intelligent. After the SR-388 incident, where Samus captured the infant Metroid, Ridley took the Space Academy by storm, annihilating the complex and taking the Metroid back.
Samus Unmasked Hacking Samus Unmasked ssbm Trophy.png It's said that the orphaned Samus Aran was raised by the few survivors of the Chozo race. They armed her with a Power Suit and taught her the ways of advanced combat; even burdened with her heavy suit, Samus is as graceful as a butterfly. In the Metroid series, it was standard that Samus would remove her helmet and armor if you cleared the game fast enough.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl

Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Main article: Super Smash Bros. Brawl

Characters

  • Samus Aran makes a third appearance in the series in Brawl. Her arsenal and attacks are nearly identical to those used in Melee but includes a powerful final smash known as the Zero Laser, a huge beam fired from her Arm Cannon that blasts her armor away, allowing her to continue fighting in her Zero Suit.
  • Zero Suit Samus makes her first appearance in the Super Smash Bros. series in Brawl. Aside from an array of melee attacks, she also utilizes her Paralyzer gun in combat, with added functionality not previous seen in any Metroid games including the Plasma Wire and Plasma Whip. Her final smash re-materializes her Power Suit.

Stages

  • Norfair appears as a stage for combat, inspired by the Norfair area. It features five platforms hovering over lava that will rise and fall occasionally, as well as spray from the sides, bubble up from beneath, and even completely cover the stage in a large wave.

Items

  • The Screw Attack appears again, and has identical functionality to the Melee incarnation, except it cannot be thrown at enemies.

Assist Trophies

  • A Metroid can be summoned using an assist trophy to drain an opponent's energy. It will latch onto an enemy character cause damage in the same manner as Metroids have throughout the Metroid series.

Bosses

  • Ridley appears as a boss during the Subspace Emissary mode. Ridley is fought on a large, flat platform, and uses his powerful wings, tail, and claws in a variety of melee attacks.

Music

Music from the Metroid series in Brawl includes 13 different tracks.

  • Main Theme (Metroid) A rock styled remix of the Brinstar theme from the first Metroid title. Aside from the vocals at the beginning of the track, this is taken almost directly from Metroid Prime Pinball, with the insertion of some extra instruments and the addition of the original Brinstar NES-like remix. It is used on the Norfair stage.
  • Ending (Metroid) - An orchestrated version of the credits theme used in both the original Metroid and its remake Metroid Zero Mission. It is used on the Norfair stage. This song is also played during both Samus and Zero Suit Samus' Classic Mode credits.
  • Norfair - A quirky remix of the lesser known Norfair theme from the original Metroid game. It is the theme of the Norfair stage.
  • Theme of Samus Aran, Space Warrior - An orchestration of the credits theme of the SNES hit Super Metroid. It is used on the Norfair stage.
  • Vs. Ridley - A completely redone version of Ridley's theme that is featured in several Metroid games and originated in Super Metroid. It is used on the Frigate Orpheon stage.
  • Vs. Parasite Queen - Taken directly from Metroid Prime, this was the track that played when Samus fought the Parasite Queen during the opening section of the game. It is used on the Frigate Orpheon stage.
  • Opening/Menu (Metroid Prime) - A medley of two tracks from Metroid Prime--the title screen and the credits theme (which itself was an extension of the menu theme). With the exception of the vocals at the beginning, the title screen theme is taken directly from the game, while the credits theme is arranged. It is the theme of the Frigate Orpheon stage.
  • Sector 1 - An orchestrated version of the background music of the first mission in Sector 1 in Metroid Fusion. It is used on the Frigate Orpheon stage.
  • Vs. Meta Ridley - Taken directly from Metroid Prime, this was the background music that played during the fight against Meta Ridley. This same, unaltered track was also used in Metroid Prime 3: Corruption. It is used on the Frigate Orpheon stage.
  • Multiplayer (Metroid Prime 2) - A track taken directly from the multiplayer mode of Metroid Prime 2: Echoes, which itself was a techno remix of the Brinstar background music from Super Metroid. It is used on the Frigate Orpheon stage.
  • Brinstar (Melee) - Taken directly from Melee. It is used on the Brinstar stage.
  • Brinstar Depths (Melee) - Taken directly from Melee. It is used on the Brinstar stage.
  • Samus's Victory Theme - The "got item" fanfare featured in every single Metroid game to date, except Metroid: Other M.

Samus Clear Classic Mode as Samus Samus - Brawl Trophy.png The intergalactic bounty hunter named Samus Aran. Orphaned at an early age, she was taken in and raised by the alien race known as the Chozo. The Power Suit she wears is a product of their technology. Her unique combat skills combined with her athleticism and Arm Cannon have seen her through countless missions.
Zero Laser Clear All-Star Mode as Samus Zero Laser - Brawl Trophy.png Samus's Final Smash. The beam emerging from her Arm Cannon is dreadfully powerful and causes great damage to enemies. The beam travels slowly but can be swept up and down. The recoil of the beam is so great that it tears off her Power Suit, revealing Zero Suit Samus. The pieces of her armor can be picked up and thrown as weapons.
Zero Suit Samus Clear Classic Mode as Zero Suit Samus Zero Suit Samus Brawl Trophy.png Samus Aran without her mighty Power Suit. In this condition, she does not have the firepower she's famed for but is in full possession of the agility and athleticism she gained through her childhood training with the Chozo. Without the armor, she's also much, much faster. The weapon she carries is a self-protection device known as a Paralyzer that stops enemies cold.
Power Suit Samus Clear All-Star Mode as Zero Suit Samus Power Suit Samus - Brawl Trophy.png Zero Suit Samus's Final Smash. Samus loses her Power Suit when she fires the Zero Laser, but she can restore it—that is, she can return from her Zero Suit form to her familiar armored form. That being said, Zero Suit Samus is very quick with great reach, so there are tactical reasons to fight as is. If that's your preference, don't pick up any Smash Balls.
Screw Attack Random Screw Attack - Brawl Trophy.png A badge you can wear to turn your jumps into Samus's signature Screw Attacks. In Super Smash Bros. Melee, it was an item you carried, but this time around its a badge you wear—which means you can use it and another item at the same time. There's a good chance you'll be able to string together Screw Attacks and midair strikes for powerful combos.
Metroid Random Metroid - Brawl Trophy.png A bioengineered life-form found on planet SR388. Metroids attach to organisms and drain life energy. The Galactic Federation commissions Samus to eliminate them, but Space Pirates try to harness their power. One of the few ways Samus can kill Metroids is by shooting them with the Ice Beam and then shattering them with missiles. The Metroid's cry is chilling and indescribable.
Samus (Fusion Suit) Random Samus (Fusion Suit) - Brawl Trophy.png During exploration of SR388, Samus is infected by an X parasite and nearly dies. A vaccine created from Metroid cells saves her, but her suit turns blue and loses most of its abilities and weapons. This new Samus must regather her special abilities and fight to neutralize the threat of the X parasites in the space station run by Biologic Space Laboratories.
Samus (Power Suit) Random Samus (Power Suit) - Brawl Trophy.png Samus in the basic version of the legendary Power Suit, made for her by the Chozo race. Samus is most often seen at the beginning of each game in this suit. The normal Power Suit has the lowest level of protective power and features no additional functions. She can use the cannon on her right arm for power shots and build up her arsenal through item pick-ups.
Samus (Varia Suit) Random Samus (Varia Suit) - Brawl Trophy.png A suit with a higher level of protection than the Power Suit. It eliminates damage caused by very hot or cold areas. It is also more resilient to enemy attacks than the Power Suit and great differs in shoulder design. Recent visual depictions of Samus often show her wearing the Varia Suit.
Samus (Gravity Suit) Random Samus (Gravity Suit) - Brawl Trophy.png A Power Suit that provides even more damage protection than the Varia Suit. This Gravity Suit also allows Samus to move without water resistance when underwater. In most games in the series, this suit also blocks lava damage and friction. In addition, it allows Samus to use item bonuses like the High Jump, Space Jump, even when underwater or in lava.
Samus (Dark Suit) Random Samus (Dark Suit) - Brawl Trophy.png A Power Suit that reduces damage taken from the atmosphere of Dark Aether. It is obtained after defeating Amorbis in the Dark Torvus Temple.[note 1] With its increased protection, it greatly widens the range of exploration available in the toxic atmosphere. This suit was developed by the Luminoth, the native race of Aether.
Dark Samus Random Dark Samus Trophy.jpg A twin image of Samus, encountered near the beginning of Metroid Prime 2: Echoes. Dark Samus is identical to Samus in every way but color—she even uses similar attacks. There are many theories on the origin of Dark Samus, but none are proven.[note 2] Dark Samus uses Phazon for energy and can absorb it to heal damage. Samus encounters Dark Samus a number of times.
Ridley Trophy Stand Ridley - Brawl Trophy.png A high-ranking official of the Space Pirates. He looks like a pterosaur but has high intelligence and a brutal nature. He plans to steal the baby Metroid from Samus for his own use. Ridley utilizes wings for a full range of flight and attacks with fireballs from his mouth and whips of his tail. As the culprit behind the murder of Samus's parents, the connections with Samus run deep.
Meta Ridley Trophy Stand MetaRidleyTrophy.png The meta form of Ridley, revived using the Space Pirates' genetic engineering and cybernetic technologies. His thin chest plate—and weak point—is protected by a highly resistant membrane. Meta Ridley is highly mobile and features a multimissile system, a bomb launcher, and powerful wings. Ice attacks are particularly effective in dealing damage to him.
Kanden Random Kanden - Brawl Trophy.png A bounty hunter seeking the ultimate power—the secrets of the Alimbics—on a savage planet in a far corner of space. Kanden is the result of a failed lab experiment meant to create invisible soldiers.[note 3] He seeks the ultimate power to prove himself as the greatest hunter ever. Kanden's weapon is the electrically charged Volt Driver.
Spire Random Spire - Brawl Trophy.png Another hunter seeking the ultimate power, and the last of the silicon-based Diamont race. By finding the secrets of the Alimbics, he hopes to uncover the secret of why his race went extinct. Spire uses the Magmaul, a weapon passed down through Diamont generations, to launch burning magma at opponents.
Weavel Random Weavel - Brawl Trophy.png A cyborg Space Pirate and member of a special-forces unit. Weavel was once left for dead in a fight with Samus. Like other hunters, he also seeks the ultimate power. His weapon of choice is the rapid-fire, heavy duty Battlehammer. Weavel can transform into the Halfturret where his upper and lower body split and can attack separately.
Noxus Random Noxus - Brawl Trophy.png A bounty hunter and member of the elite Vhozon race. He seeks the ultimate power if only to ensure that no one else possesses it. Noxus uses the Judicator, an ice-beam weapon which, in addition to its offensive ice blasts, features a protective field that freezes opponents.
Trace Random Trace - Brawl Trophy.png A bounty hunter and member of the Kriken Empire, which is despised for ruthless invasions of planets. He seeks the ultimate power in order to further empower his people and gain fame and strength for himself. Trace has stealth capabilities and can make himself invisible. His weapon is the Imperialist, a sniping laser.
Sylux Random Sylux - Brawl Trophy.png A skilled marksman and bounty hunter experienced in espionage skills such as scouting and tracking. While much of his background remains a mystery, it is clear that he hates Samus and the Federation. Sylux uses the Shock Coil, an experimental Federation-made weapon that continually drains energy from enemies and refills his own.
Luminoth Random Luminoth - Brawl Trophy.png A creature of the native race of the planet Aether. The Luminoth develop facilities to draw the dwindling energy from the core of their planet. However, they lose that energy when the planet is hit by a Phazon meteor and they are attacked by a race of dark creatures, the Ing. A war over Aether's energy then rages between the Luminoth and Ing races.
Sheegoth Random Sheegoth - Brawl Trophy.png A boss guarding the Wave Beam in the icy Chapel of Elders. It appears after Samus defeats four Baby Sheegoths. The crystals on its back will absorb any shots, so the trick is to shoot it in the head with missiles when its mouth is wide open. The Plasma Beam deal severe damage to this creature.
Space Pirate Random Space Pirate - Brawl Trophy.png An enemy of Samus. They land on Tallon IV and use the energy they find there—called Phazon—for brutal experiments on the planet's life-forms. Samus makes for Tallon IV to destroy the experiment facilities. In Metroid Prime 2: Echoes, the pirates go to Aether to find Phazon. A war is being held waged there, and a race of dark beasts, the Ing, make research difficult.
Parasite Queen Random Parasite Queen - Brawl Trophy.png Space Pirates performed many experiments using Phazon as a means to artificially enhance physical strength. The Parasite Queens are the result of these experiment on one small life-form. This Parasite Queen lived in a nuclear power reactor and fired destructive beams at Samus from its mouth. The barrier that spun around the queen reflected its and Samus's attacks.
Metroid Prime (Core) Random Metroid Prime (Core).png The core form of Metroid Prime after losing its exoskeleton. It can make itself invisible for a set time, which requires Samus to make a visor change. Normal hits do not have any effect on it—the Metroid Prime can eventually be defeated by using the Phazon Beam while standing in a Phazon puddle.
Metroid Prime (Exo) Random Metroid Prime (Exo).png The form of the Metroid Prime that Samus first encounters. It can become invulnerable to all but one of Samus's weapons at a time. The body color alternates between yellow, purple, white, and red, with color indicating the weapon that can deal damage. After taking a certain amount of damage, the Metroid Prime exoskeleton reveals its core essence.
Gunship Random Gunship Trophy.png The ship that Samus pilots. Entering the gunship allows Samus to restore energy and save. Samus has been on numerous voyages in the gunship, but after being attacked by an X parasite in Metroid Fusion, she crashes into an asteroid belt and destroys the craft. After that, the Galactic Federation provides her with a new starship.
