The Wave Beam is one of the upgrades to Samus's basic Beam weapons, designed by the Chozo. Its exact function varies between games.

In Metroid, Metroid II: Return of Samus and Super Metroid Samus's Arm Cannon fires a single oscillating beam. In Metroid: Zero Mission, the Arm Cannon fires three simultaneous-oscillating beams. In Metroid Fusion the Arm Cannon already fired three simultaneous beams due to the Wide Beam, but it adds oscillations. In Super Metroid, it will let the Plasma Beam fire two simultaneous beams if they are equipped together. In all 2D appearances of the Wave Beam, it can travel through walls.[1]

In Metroid Prime, it causes the arm cannon to fire three oscillating electrical pulses that will have limited homing abilities on any target Samus locks on to. A charged shot will briefly paralyze enemies that it hits.[2] The electrical pulses can easily destroy machines,[3] and be used to energize Power Conduits.[4] The Wave Beam is also one of Samus's weapons that have been reverse-engineered, wielded by the Wave Trooper variation of Trooper Pirates.[5]

Wavebuster

Main article: Wavebuster

The Wavebuster is the Wave Beam's Charge Combo. It fires a sustained beam that can home in on any nearby target without the need to lock on.

Data

Manuals

Manual Entries
Manual info from Metroid
Wave Beam: The beams are wave-shaped and are stronger than normal beams. If you already have a long beam, the long beam becomes a long wave beam.[6]
Manual info from Metroid: Zero Mission
Wave Beam: This allows Samus to fire beams of energy waves that can penetrate walls.[7]
Manual info from Metroid Prime
Wave Beam: The Wave Beam fires three oscillating waves of energy. As with the other beam weapons, the Wave Beam is especially effective against certain energies and can be powered up once Samus finds the Charge Beam. The Wave Beam also features a limited homing effect.[8]
Manual info from Metroid Prime Trilogy
Wave Beam: The Wave Beam fires 3 oscillating waves of energy. When you lock on and fire, the beam homes the target. Enemies hit by this beam may get a electrical shock and be unable to move.[9]
Wave Beam: The beam travels in a wave shape. It is a very powerful beam and has a wide range of effect.[10]
Manual info from Super Metroid
Wave Beam: The Wave Beam sends out a charge in a wavy pattern and pierces some obstacles.[1]
Manual info from Metroid: Other M
Wave Beam: Adds the ability to penetrate transparent and semi-transparent objects. This powerful beam can also be shot as a Charge Beam.[11]
Manual info from Metroid Fusion
Wave Beam: Shoot through obstacles with this undulating beam.[12]

In Game Data

Metroid: Zero Mission

"This beam, which is made up of energy waves, can pass through solid objects."[13]

Metroid Prime

"Fire the Wave Beam to open Purple Doors. The Wave Beam won't home in on targets without a lock-on. Press and hold L to lock on. Charge the Wave Beam to fire a fierce electric blast. Enemies struck by this blast will be enveloped in electrical energy for a few moments."[2]

Metroid: Other M

"Effect: Increases damage.
Secondary effect of penetrating materials that are transparent or semitransparent."
