In Metroid Prime 2: Echoes, Splinters are large, aggressive, insect-like creatures found on Aether. They hide in cocoons and will attack any creatures that approach. If one is killed inside its cocoon, it emits a shriek to alert any nearby allies of Samus's presence.[1] Samus encounters them in the Temple Grounds and in the Great Temple. However, in the Great Temple, they are quickly possessed before she can battle them.

Splinters are implied to live in hives, similar to bees and other insects. However, some logs found throughout the game also imply the species to be a bit more complex and social, suggesting that killing off one hive would aggravate others.[2] Interestingly, they're never shown or mentioned to have a queen, as most hives would, but instead there is a larger, more aggressive variant known as the Alpha Splinter that leads packs, similar to wolves and other mammalian predators.[3]
