Dark Samus is a combination of elements from Metroid Prime, Samus Aran, and Samus's Phazon Suit.

History

Immediately after Samus Aran defeated Metroid Prime on Tallon IV's Impact Crater, the dying creature reached out for Samus as a last resort and ripped off Samus's Phazon Suit. Samus escaped the scene of the final battle and left the creature to die in a collapsing cave to save herself and escape in her Gunship. However, Metroid Prime was not finished; it combined elements from itself, Samus, and the Phazon Suit to be reborn as a completely new entity, known in the future Prime games as Dark Samus.

Dark Samus in Metroid Prime 2: Echoes

Samus first encounters Dark Samus inside an abandoned Galatic Federation base inside the planet Aether. Samus travels through a Dark Portal to Dark Aether and finds Dark Samus absorbing Phazon on the other side. Samus tries to attack but Dark Samus destroys a Light Crystal nearby, allowing Ing to swarm in and attack Samus. Samus manages to escape before Dark Aether's atmosphere causes any severe damage.

Dark Samus is next seen in the Phazon Processing in the Space Pirate facility in Agon Wastes. Dark Samus attacks Samus, who was able to retaliate more effectively than she had on Dark Aether. Samus defeats Dark Samus and she shatters into Phazon particles.

Samus again finds Dark Samus in the hydro plant of Torvus Bog, where she reforms, laughs, and dissipated again. Dark Samus makes no attempt to hinder or attack Samus during this encounter. It is uncertain what Dark Samus's intentions here might have been.

At the entrance to Sanctuary Fortress, Dark Samus again confronts Samus. Dark Samus destroys the bridge structure here, preventing Samus from using it to access the elevator leading from Sanctuary to the Temple Grounds. However, Samus is able to use her recently acquired Spider Ball to access the elevator despite the lack of a bridge.

The second to last encounter between Samus and Dark Samus in Echoes is in the Aerie, the summit of the Sanctuary Fortress. Dark Samus once again attacks Samus. Though Dark Samus demonstrates several new techniques, Samus is able to defeat her once again. Dark Samus then staggers and falls off of the edge of the fortress.

After the Samus's acquisition of the final portion of the Light of Aether from the Dark Aether Energy Controllers, the planet had become unstable. While Samus was attempting to escape back to Aether, Dark Samus again accosts Samus and attempts a final attack on her. After Samus hits Dark Samus with with a few volleys of Missiles, Dark Samus becomes invulnerable to all of Samus's weaponry. However, Dark Samus's attacks create an excess of Phazon, which needs to be discharged. Samus is able to draw this discharged Phazon into her Arm Cannon, then fire it back out at Dark Samus, overloading Dark Samus's Phazon intake. This proves to be an effective mode of attack, and the doppelgänger was defeated. Dark Samus dissolves into particles of Phazon, and Samus escapes before the destruction of Dark Aether.

Some time later, a cloud of Phazon in space above Aether coalesces and forms a new body for Dark Samus. It seems that she was unable to maintain this form, as she is later collected by Space Pirates in the form of raw Phazon.

After her defeat on Aether, Dark Samus's remains are picked up by a Space Pirate craft that had been retrieving the remainder of the Phazon on the planet Aether. Dark Samus was then able to regain her form using energy from Phazon stored on board. Dark Samus, after regaining her form, kills a third of the Space Pirates on the ship.[1] The rest of the Space Pirates were put under her control using a special type of Phazon created by Dark Samus; this type of Phazon is aptly nicknamed "Dark Samus Phazon".

Dark Samus then ventures to Phaaze, the source of all Phazon, and returns to her followers with a Leviathan seed, a destructive seed of Phaaze. Dark Samus sends the Leviathan to the Space Pirate Homeworld, using it to take control of all the Space Pirates. Dark Samus then invades the G.F.S. Valhalla, takes Aurora Unit 313, goes to Phaaze, implants it there, and takes control over the entire planet.

Dark Samus then launches three additional Leviathans. These are destined to Bryyo, Elysia, and Norion. Dark Samus goes to Norion to ensure the Leviathan's impact, since it is heavily guarded by the Galactic Federation. Samus Aran, Rundas, Ghor, and Gandrayda manage to repulse the Norion attack, but Dark Samus infects the four hunters with a type of Phazon only known as Dark Samus Phazon. Samus was able to resist this Phazon's corrupting influence, but the three other bounty hunters eventually succumbed and became the servants of Dark Samus.

The only direct battle between Samus and Dark Samus happens on Phaaze. After her defeat by Samus, Dark Samus merges with Aurora Unit 313. Samus destroys the Aurora Unit, which purges the "Dark Samus Phazon" from Samus and Dark Samus is destroyed with no signs of Dark Samus's survival.

There are many theories on the origin of Dark Samus, but none are proven. Dark Samus uses Phazon for energy and can absorb it to heal damage. Samus encounters Dark Samus a number of times.

They foolishly left most of the Phazon behind, allowing us to quickly collect what we could. But in our haste we took more than mere Phazon. Our scanners have detected the remains of Dark Samus, who has revived herself within our Phazon storage. Surely, we are cursed. The fiendish shrew consumed all of the Phazon, then wiped out a third of the crew in a matter of minutes. Now she moves at will through the halls of Colossus, using her witchery to beguile the minds of the crew. We are unable to call for aid, and only a few of us remain to stand against her. All is lost.
