The Alpha Sandigger is the dominant male of the Sandigger species of Agon Wastes and the second boss in Metroid Prime 2: Echoes. Like other Sandiggers, it attacks by ramming and firing acidic fluid. Shortly into the battle, it is possessed by the Ing, and turns into the Bomb Guardian.

Battle

Alpha Sandigger

The Alpha Sandigger attacks in the same manner as a normal Sandigger. Its attacks are more potent than those of normal Sandiggers. A short while after the battle's start, it becomes possessed and the battle with the Bomb Guardian begins.

Bomb Guardian

Shortly after the Alpha Sandigger attacks Samus, it is possessed by the Ing that stole Samus's Bombs. The Bomb Guardian's second head mutates and gains the ability to drop Bombs. It will crawl around the arena, dropping several bombs out behind its tail, or spraying several bombs in a spreadshot pattern. Its mandibles will not open, preventing Samus from attacking the Bomb Guardian. Its tail is more sensitive however, allowing Samus to temporarily stun the creature with enough damage. During this time, Samus can damage the creature's head, but if she fails to attack it enough the Bomb Guardian will fire out a large amount of Bombs.

Logbook

First Location: Agon Wastes - Agon Temple Limited Scan
This appears to be a Sandigger pack leader, larger and stronger than the normal members of its kind. Target both of its heads to damage it.[1]
Logbook entry from Metroid Prime 2: Echoes: Bomb Guardian
First Location: Agon Wastes - Agon Temple Limited Scan
This darkling Sandigger has absorbed the ability to generate Morph Ball Bombs. It can throw Bombs with considerable accuracy, and frequently lays a spread of Bombs in its wake. Its head and tail are the only vulnerable spots on its body. Target them when they are vulnerable to neutralize and terminate this enemy.[2]

Trivia

  • Unlike the Alpha Splinter, the Alpha Sandigger is possessed after a certain amount of time, instead of after a certain amount of damage taken. This makes the scan for the Alpha Sandigger a matter of priority once the battle starts.
