Phazon (called the Great Poison by the Chozo race) is an extremely radioactive and dangerous organic substance that can take on many forms. The mutagen is highly poisonous and corrosive, and contact with Phazon will result in immediate death or mutation in seconds.[1] Phazon spreads throughout the galaxy and manipulates organisms with Phazon Corruption. Many creatures can be Corrupted by Phazon and mutate completely. The toxic substance can destroy environments, and entire planets at that. Phazon was first detected on planet Tallon IV, although it has been spreading across the galaxy long before the Corruption of Tallon IV from its planet of origin, Phaaze.[1] The plot of the Metroid Prime series revolves greatly around Phazon.

Morphology

Phazon in Dark Aether.

Not much is known regarding the true nature of Phazon as a material substance. It is highly radioactive, corrosive, and biologically toxic, and has even demonstrated low-level sentience. It has been used extensively by the Space Pirates for its effective mutagenic properties, of which they have used for mutating their species' (as well as many others) own genetic structure, to produce more powerful and even monstrous versions of themselves and others. Though it does increase power and aggression, it does decrease the bio-form's life span, as it deteriorates cellular structure, in addition to changing the genetic code. During the course of Samus's visit to Phaaze, the Phazon inside of her even affected her genetic structure to the point where her ship's bio-scanners could not even recognize her.

Phazon was also later adopted by the Galactic Federation for a short time, where it was converted into beam weaponry and adopted through the use of a Phazon Enhancement Device, or P.E.D. Suit. This would originally be used as an external source of firepower to Federation Troops, but as for Samus and the other members introduced in Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, the Phazon constantly grew inside of them, therefore allowing them to essentially have an unlimited source of extra firepower.

Metroid Prime

Some 50 years prior to the events of Metroid Prime, a meteor infected with Phazon struck the planet Tallon IV, causing great devastation and forcing the Chozo colonists who survived to flee.[2] Before abandoning the planet, the Chozo attempted to contain the spread of Phazon on the planet at the impact site by means of a Cradle and Cipher.

At the heart of the impact site was a Metroid specimen whose exposure to raw Phazon radically mutated it. It became the subject known as Metroid Prime. After its defeat by Samus Aran, Metroid Prime ensnares her Phazon Suit and uses it and parts of Samus's own DNA to eventually become the organism known as Dark Samus.

Around this same time, Space Pirates discovered Phazon and began experimenting with its biomutagenic properties. Initial experiments were made on Tallon Metroids in the Glacier One outpost in Phendrana Drifts, which the Space Pirates planned to use as weapons and power sources. Tests yielded such results as Hunter Metroids and Fission Metroids. Later experiments, such as Project Titan, which focused on the mutation and animation of inanimate objects,[3] resulted in the specimen Thardus before it was completely shut down.[4] Project Helix, which aimed to mutate Space Pirate DNA with Phazon,[5] finally succeeded when the Phazon Strain Vertigo was discovered by Research Team Sclera and several specimens, including Elite Pirates, a Phazon Elite, and the Omega Pirate, survived to maturity.[6]

Metroid Prime 2: Echoes

Phazon was first introduced to the planet Aether at the beginning of the Luminoth Dark Age. A Leviathan impacted the planet, sending it into a state of Transdimensional Flux that ultimately resulted in the creation of Dark Aether and the Ing.[7][8] Space Pirate science teams detected the presence of Phazon in the Dasha System seven cycles prior to Samus's arrival and established a base on the planet.[9] Expeditions through a dimensional rift revealed that Dark Aether contained vastly superior deposits of Phazon than its light counterpart and extraction missions were soon conducted regularly.[10][11] Metroid Prime, reborn as Dark Samus and mistaken for Samus Aran by the Space Pirates, soon began raiding their base and stealing Phazon for her own purposes.[12] Dark Samus eventually absorbs so much Phazon energy that she becomes a being of pure yet unstable Phazon.[13]

Following the destruction of Dark Aether and the Ing, a Galactic Federation vessel, the G.F.S. Anhur, returned to Aether to assist the Luminoth in dismantling the Space Pirate mining facility. Several kilograms of Phazon ore recovered during this time later led to the development of the Phazon Enhancement Device.[8]

The appearance in this game is much more obvious, four huge Leviathan meteors came to the planets, crashing and depositing the Phazon into the surface, where it would grow, inhabit bioforms, supply Dark Samus of energy for the road, and even have its own, though not very substantial, life mass. Metroids in this game are much more exposed to Phazon, as easily visible in Metroid Hatchers. Pirates are now equipped with the P.E.D. Suits, which increase fire power by about 3x, and defense is almost impenetrable without going into Hyper Mode. Phazon in this game is seen almost everywhere Samus looks, weather it be a tiny puddle on the ground with a little hair growing out of it, or a huge swimming pool full of it. It can also be seen in the organisms that are designed to be destroyed for energy, with a glowing blue aura, suggesting that Phazon is present. Also, there is a greater percentage of organisms in this game that Phazon in them.

As for Samus, unlike other games, Phazon heals her, at and alarmingly exponential rate, similar to Orange Phazon as seen in Metroid Prime, but with the completely opposite effect. This would be Blue Phazon in its purest form, which can be seen 2 times in this game. The first time Samus sees the pool of Phazon while using Hyper Mode would be the beginning of her internal corruption. As the game progresses after beating Planet Bosses, her corruption increases, of which by the end of the game reaches 100%.

As the game progresses, more Phazon is seen sitting around, with minor infections at the beginning, and more severe infections at Phaaze. This does not interfere with gameplay much, other than the fact that the Pirates are stronger as the game progresses also, with higher technology, and stronger firepower.

At the end of the game, after Samus destroys Dark Samus and the Aurora Unit, the Phazon everywhere supposedly gets destroyed, or it is in such a little amount that it doesn't matter.

Logbook Entry

Logbook entry from Metroid Prime 2: Echoes: Phazon
Volatile ore with biomutagenic properties. Origin point of Phazon unknown. First detection of element on planet Tallon IV. Used by Space Pirates to produce vast levels of energy. Bioforms exposed to Phazon without proper shielding will eventually undergo radical mutation.[1]

Preliminary studies indicate that Phazon infusion could produce radical new Pirate genomes. Benevolent mutation levels are high in current test subjects. None of what we have termed 'Elite Pirates' lived to maturity; the few that survived their infanthood suffered severe psychotic breakdowns as juveniles, killing anything within their zone of perception. Research team Sclera made a recent breakthrough, in which parasite studies with a Phazon strain code-named 'Vertigo' were highly successful. 8. 8.0 8.1 "Planet Aether, home of the Luminoth, was struck by a “Phazon Meteor” five decades ago. The impact had catastrophic effects on the already unstable planet, creating a “dark twin” of the planet and a fierce race known as the Ing. A brutal war between the twin planets took place, with the Ing gaining the upper hand. The G.F.S. Tyr went to the sector to investigate pirate activity, but were forced to make an emergency landing on Aether. Shortly after, the entire crew of Tyr was attacked and annihilated by the Ing. Hunter Samus Aran was sent to investigate, and wound up entangled in the local conflict. Aran fought against both Space Pirates and Ing, and arose victorious. Aether’s “dark twin” vanished, taking with it the Ing horde, and the planet’s peace was finally restored.
After the Aether incident, the Federation sent the G.F.S. Anhur back to Aether to deal with the pirate base. Upon arrival, the crew and marines of the Anhur assisted the native Luminoth in dismantling an abandoned Space Pirate mining facility. During the operation, the crew detected the presence of Phazon. The ship’s crew investigated and collected several kilograms of ore, which would later lead to the development of the PED.

Our orders are to establish a base on planet Aether and evaluate local Phazon resources. A cadre of elite commandos has been dispatched to provide security for our force as well. We've sent expeditions through the portal, and they have returned with incredible news. The portal leads to a parallel version of Aether. This "Dark Aether" has suffered a global calamity, turning it into a toxic wasteland. It is the homeworld of the shadowy creature who have been raiding our base for the last cycle. Most importantly, it is the prime location of Phazon in this sector. Extraction plans are being prepared. We will not be denied!" —Metroid Prime 2: Echoes Logbook "Log 05.422.1 (Rift Portal)" (Metroid Prime 2: Echoes)
  11. "Phazon extraction raids are under way on Dark Aether. The toxicity of the atmosphere has taken a toll on our workforce, as have the hostile natives of that world. Science Team is preparing survival gear to protect our work teams, and we have increased our security presence in extraction areas. Fortunately, High Command is sending more troops and supplies. Our troops and resources are spread dangerously thin, and this mission cannot fail." —Metroid Prime 2: Echoes Logbook "Log 06.221.7 (Phazon Raids)" (Metroid Prime 2: Echoes)
