Portals are dimensional anomalies found on Aether and Dark Aether in Metroid Prime 2: Echoes. There are two types of portals; white portals found in Dark Aether known as Light Portals and black portals found on Aether known as Dark Portals. Due to the dimensional instability caused by the impact of Aether's Leviathan, Light and Dark Aether often overlap in places. This can cause areas where matter can pass through the interdimensional void and travel from one to the other. These portals can lead both ways, or they may only travel in one direction. Regardless, in their natural state, the portals are too unstable for anything to safely pass through. They can be stabilized by dark or light energy, in the form of the Dark Beam and Light Beam, respectively, depending on the type of portal. Dark portals require dark energy while light portals require light energy. Energizing them in this way temporarily allows matter, including Samus, to safely pass through.
Eventually the Luminoth created machines that could open synthetic, rather than naturally occurring, rifts. These allowed one to energize the portal by interacting with the controls.[1][2]
There are two abnormal Portals encountered in the game. At the beginning of the game, Samus follows Dark Samus through a Portal to Dark Aether. Dark Samus fires at a Light Crystal that Samus is near to and a group of Warrior Ing attack Samus. After Samus escapes, both Portals strangely disappear. Another strange portal is underneath the Great Temple in the Hall of Honored Dead. This dark portal is constantly energized, and scans indicate that it cannot be utilized for interdimensional travel due to an active security system.[3] The equivelent portal on Dark Aether is covered in Phazon. When Samus escapes the collapsing Dark Aether, she uses this portal as both sides are now free of obstructions. As she exits through this portal, Ing attempt to escape but fail and are destroyed along with Dark Aether.
